BFC was founded in 2003. Its head office is in Zurich, Switzerland. BFC employs 50 permanent full time staff in branch offices located in Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Tajikistan.
BFC believes that success in microfinance is built upon sound management, professional staff, and efficient systems. When these conditions are met funding will flow, allowing both the institutions and their clients to flourish. BFC assists microfinance service providers meet the needs of their clients while managing their growth well.

BFC implemented a survey of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in four countries: Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine and Russia in accordance with international standards (ESOMAR).
BFC has participated in the first phase of the GTZ funded programme “Institutionalization of internal control system in small and medium MFOs”.
Under the World Bank Study "Access to Financial Services in Pakistan" BFC undertook the project "How commercial banks could better serve small businesses in Pakistan" in November 2006January 2007. The aim of the study was to better understand the financial needs of small businesses and the financial products currently available from commercial banks.
BFC undertake a thorough and rigorous study of the characteristics of the demand for financial services in Egypt with an analysis of the existing gap between demand and supply.
BFC developed the methodology and test instruments for the first computerized assessment of bank's staff, and carried out an assessment of middle management.
During the SME Lending Strengthening programme at a local bank, BFC support covered: situation analysis, model development, implementation and training.
BFC was contracted by EBRD to implement and develop strong SME lending skills at five partner banks (Agroinvestbank, TojikSodirotBank, TajPromBank, Bank Eskhata and Kazkommertsbank-Tajikistan), enabling them to finance SME clients in a sustainable manner.
