BFC was founded in 2003. Its head office is in Zurich, Switzerland. BFC employs 50 permanent full time staff in branch offices located in Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Tajikistan.
BFC believes that success in microfinance is built upon sound management, professional staff, and efficient systems. When these conditions are met funding will flow, allowing both the institutions and their clients to flourish. BFC assists microfinance service providers meet the needs of their clients while managing their growth well.

BFC provided recommendations to the German development bank KfW for the design and implementation of a microfinance program in China which will facilitate the growth of a commercially viable microfinance industry.
BFC was contracted by Doha Bank to review newly developed SME products and lending procedures and provide training on SME lending to selected staff.
BFC was contracted by EBRD to implement and develop strong SME lending skills at five partner banks (Agroinvestbank, TojikSodirotBank, TajPromBank, Bank Eskhata and Kazkommertsbank-Tajikistan), enabling them to finance SME clients in a sustainable manner.
During the one-month assignment BFC has worked with Credins Bank at reviewing the MSE products, strengthening lending procedures and developing the skills of the MSE Lending staff
Since August 2009, BFC has been conducting due diligence studies for ADB’s Trade Finance Facilitation Programme. The assignment spans over a period of two years and involves the services of 11 staff members of BFC’s due diligence team.
BFC and Bankakademie (today Frankfurt School of Finance and Management) have made SELP (Small Enterprise Lending Programme) a success by
BFC together with Bankakademie (today Frankfurt School of Finance and Management) has administered screening tests to almost 1000 applicants for Loan Officer and managerial and consultant positions. Over 400 applicants have been interviewed, both individually and in groups.
